“Grand Guignol of Freemasonry during the Inquisition.”
In 1738 Pope Clement XXII denounced Freemasons, and the members of the craft became persecuted as heretics and rebels by the Holy Office also known as The Inquisition. The most famous case is that of John Coustos who published an account of his ordeal. Our play re-enacts these events and conveys the essence of the charges against Coustos, the evidence produced in court, the suffering he endured and the result of his trial. The Antients & Moderns the Early Years 1717 to 1783
Freemasonry during the eighteenth century was dominated by the formation of a Grand Lodge in 1717, a rival Grand Lodge in 1751 and their eventual Union in 1813. The dramatization of these events and the century of turmoil which accompanied them is brought to life through the famous characters of the time. Anthony Sayer the 1st Grand Master, Dr James Anderson with his book of constitutions and Laurence Dermott are just some of the Masons you will meet as we turn the pages of history.
