250th Anniversary
6th September 2009
On Sunday the 6
th September, Norwich Cathedral was the venue for the celebration to mark the first Norfolk Provincial Grand Lodge meeting, which took place 250 years ago to the day. Together with the Provincial Grand Master, John Rushmer and Mrs Judith Rushmer, were Viscountess Knollys, who also attended a Masonic function in January whilst fulfilling her role as High Sherriff of Norfolk. Deputy Provincial Grand Master, Stephen Allen and Mrs Sue Allen, Assistant Provincial Grand Master’s Brian Barton and Mike Hedges together with their ladies were also in attendance and we were joined by the Provincial Grand Master for the Province of Suffolk, Barry Ross and Mrs Ross and his Assistant Provincial Grand Master, Barry Rackham. The naïve was filled with Norfolk Freemasons and the readings (or lessons) were given by Past Deputy Provincial Grand Master, Colin Walmsley who was present with Mrs Walmsley and the Provincial Grand Master. Many of the heads of other Masonic Orders were present with their ladies to acknowledge this rather special day for Craft Freemasonry in Norfolk.

The Choir was the Leys singers who, aided a little by the acoustics of the cathedral, added a splendid extra dimension. The Rt Revd. Graham James, Bishop of Norwich delivered his sermon which was funny, interesting and topical, and he had some kind words for Freemasonry in Norfolk.
The service was thoroughly enjoyed by all who were there and a considerable number of Norfolk Brethren, including the Provincial Grand Master and Mrs Rushmer and the Norfolk Executive, Prominent Masons and the heads of other Masonic Orders in Norfolk, joined the Bishop, and the Dean, the Very Revd. Graham Smith, in the refectory for tea.
